Cause Magazine • Special University Supplement An educational ideal Students choose UChicago for its rigorous liberal arts curriculum, small Socratic-style seminars, and 6:1 student-faculty ratio. Students select from 51 majors and 33 minors alongside our famed Core curriculum, an introduction to the tools of inquiry that emphasizes careful reading, analytical writing, and critical thinking. The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (OMSA) supports the academic success of students of color at UChicago and builds an inclusive campus community. More than one-third of the University’s undergraduates identify as students of color, and more than ten percent come from homes outside the United States. Members of this diverse student body find friendship and support through the University’s residential College Houses. Residents of each of the 38 College Houses enjoy meals together at shared tables in the UChicago dining halls, explore Chicago at sporting and cultural events, and compete against each other in intramural sports. Each student is guaranteed housing for four years, and many decide to remain in College Housing to enjoy its community and traditions. The University of Chicago is committed to increasing college access and affordability. The University’s No Barriers program helps make college more accessible for students through a simplified financial aid application process, waiving application fees for anyone applying for financial aid, and eliminating loans in need-based financial aid packages. In addition, the Odyssey Scholarships Program, available to families that make $90,000 a year or less, also provides need-based financial aid based on grants, not loans, and helps arrange for paid summer internships or research opportunities after a student’s first year in the College. Also, UChicago Promise provides mentoring programs to Chicago high school students before college starts and then throughout their four years. Graduate students join a distinctive community of more than 9,500 peers in over 75 programs. UChicago’s six professional schools—Chicago Booth (business), the Divinity School, Chicago Harris (public policy), Law School, Pritzker School of Medicine, and School of Social Service Administration—are national leaders in their respective fields. Graduate students study with field-defining faculty in the Biological Sciences Division, Humanities Division, Physical Sciences Division, Social Sciences Division, and Institute for Molecular Engineering. The Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies extends the University’s academic values to a broad community of adult learners. Preparation for professional success UChicago Career Advancement empowers students and alumni to translate their academic foundations into professional success. Ninety-five percent of undergraduate students have secured jobs or have postgraduation plans within one year of receiving their degrees. Through Career Advancement, the Metcalf Internship Program provides over 1,300 paid internships annually around the world for UChicago undergraduate students in almost any field, including arts, business, government, public policy, and the sciences. “Arts and culture are important at the University of Chicago. Equally important is the role that community engagement plays in our ability to be a thriving institution. As an urban university, we are committed to serving as a good neighbor, friend, and cultural collaborator in the surrounding neighborhoods.” —Theaster Gates, Director of Arts + Public Life
